On the Clock

By the time I was twelve years old, I was publishing my own neighborhood newspaper, producing a musical variety show for a crowd of younger kids at recess, and staying up past my bedtime every night on my uncle's clunky old laptop, chipping away at my first attempt at a novel.

When people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I never knew what to say. What I really wanted was to wake up every morning and go to a building full of other writers, where I could write a million different things. The fact that this job actually exists came as an intense shock. But I've since recovered.
